Green Tip Of The Day: 1800Recycling.com

American’s generate over 250 million tons of residential trash each year. On average, each person in the US generates 4.62 pounds of trash each day, while only recycling about 1.5 pounds of that trash.

Not very impressive.

Recycling products decreased the amount of energy needed to produce new products. Less energy used, means less greenhouse gas is released into the atmosphere.

Most municipalities currently have curb side pickup for recycled products along with your trash. Items that use to be thrown away can now be tossed into a recycle bin instead of the trash.

Our County (Gwinnett County, Georgia) for example currently picks up everything from empty aerosol cans to plastic water bottles and most smaller items in between. Small items like paper and plastic are easy to throw into recycling containers – but what about our larger items?

A growing concern in recent years is a category called e-waste. (Electronic Waste) According to a report we found from Electronics TakeBack Coalition, the amount of cell phones, computers, monitors, printers, fax machines and televisions the United States ends up throwing into our landfills is freighting.

Part of the problem is that most people just aren’t aware of what they can do or where they can go to recycle these items.

That’s where a resource such as 1-800-RECYCLING.com comes in. 1-800-RECYCLING.com marries homeowners and businesses who enter their zip code with recycling service they need. Their listing contains large retailers, recycling location aggregators and private entities that specialize in green technologies and reuse.

Try it out yourself. Think of an item that’s sitting around your house or apartment right now and select the appropriate button and category below.

With this very cool widget, 1-800-RECYCLING.com makes it easy to discover nearby organizations and retailers that accept and process your recyclables. It’s a far better alternative than our nearby landfills.

Go ahead. Try it out. These icons actually work!

Wish I would have found this earlier. Had to actually PAY someone to remove items I could have recycled on my own. (Plus, I don’t know what they actually did with the items.) Great little tool that I’ll be sure to use in the future. Thank you!
